I’m not even kidding when I say this is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read. It’s 2:29am and I’m literally crying because this so well-written. The Quasimodo reference really struck a nerve for me.
This was so beautifully written and a sentiment that seems to be truer by the day, or by the existence, I should say. The trope of the "bad guy" in art and in life, is an integral element to the human experience. I believe it to be a beautiful and painful part of growing older, the disillusionment of the "roles" you told yourself others played in the boxes you once, unknowingly, put them in. Thank you for this beautiful piece of literature.
This is a theme I love to explore as well. I think of how the French often explore the depths of this concept (Beauty & the Beast, HOND, Phantom of the Opera). In American literature & film, we like things to be tied up in a pretty bow. I admire how the French tell stories that swims through the complexities of morality.
